Join Maria Ferguson for an evening of her award-winning poetry, including work from her second collection Swell, upcoming with Penguin in 2025.

Eloquent and uncompromising, Swell explores the triumphs and hardships of the journey to new motherhood through pregnancy, miscarriage, birth and beyond.


Maria's first collection Alright, Girl? was Highly Commended in the Forward Prizes. Her poetry has appeared in Magma, The Rialto and The Poetry Review and she has been commissioned by the Royal Academy of Art, Stylist magazine, The Bronte Parsonage and BBC Radio.On the stage, Fat Girls Don't Dance won a Saboteur Award and Essex Girl was shortlisted for the Tony Craze Award and won Show of the Week at VAULT Festival.

We welcome our new Patron Axel Scheffler as he presents his new book published with Julia Donaldson; Jonty Gentoo: The Adventures of a Penguin. This story tells an unforgettable tale of a brave little penguin on the journey of a lifetime. Axel Scheffler is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed illustrator of some of the most well-loved children’s books. Expect stories, live drawings, and opportunity for questions…and maybe a Gruffalo.

Axel will offer book signing after his talk with books available from our book stall.
